“My late grandmother told me about her experience with the Japanese Occupation when she was a child. I would listen to her story, trying to grasp the hardship she and the people around her had to go through. I couldn’t connect with the experience. To her, it was a memory. To me, a distant history. They are somewhat mythical to listen to. I know we have grown from surviving on tapioca under the occupation, but I will never comprehend what it’s like being in one.” – Anwar Suhaimi
