Exhibition
Casually Peeking
24 Aug – 8 Sept 2019
Wong Xiang Yi is passionate and curious about gender issues. In this exhibition, she continually explores ‘Boy’s Love’, a sub-culture of Japanese Manga. She postulates that the ‘Boy’s Love’ culture could serve as a window for us to understand the behaviour of younger generation in the contemporary age. Her paintings portray the intimacy and brevity of closeness between friends of same sex, a subject she has been most casually peeking into, to avoid being at odds, hoping to discover the bonds and ties that bind these relationships together. Her painterly style delves closely to the Art Nouveau posters formalised by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the Vietnamese silk paintings while the influence of her Ling Nan training as well as her her interest in Nihonga could also be spotted.
